The MainLibrary

The Main Library of the Church District holding 600.000 volumes is listed in the book of The Most Beautiful Libraries of the World. The Library’s manuscript archive maintains charters dated before Mohács (1526), old Hungarian prints from before 1711 – some of them being precious unique copies, and several special collections (hand-painted maps, anatomical atlases, a Bible-collection, richly illustrated volumes of botany) of outstanding bibliophile value. But perhaps the role that the book collection played in the intellectual nourishment of the great scholars of the College is of even more importance. It is no surprise therefore that its historiographer (following Comenius) called the Bibliotheca “the soul of the College.” The halls of the Main Library continuously accommodates exhibitions of cultural history, and displays prominent objects from the history of Hungarian typography, including a series of bookbinding masterpieces.
